Smoke Signal - October 2007
The Smoke Signal details news as reported by individual tribes.
Shoshone
The 2007 – 2008 season started out with the tribe attending three fantastic outings.
The tribe regrouped for the year at Universal Studios. It was the tail end of summer and the temperature was hot. Thankfully Jurassic Park and Waterworld cooled off both the dads and kids and by 4:30 we were ready to call it a day.
Next it was off to the California Museum of Science and Industry. We experienced an earthquake, learned how about the strength of arches and even witnessed chickens hatching. Big Running Deer was even coaxed onto the High Wire Bicycle!

As always Big Rock Creek was a highlight of the year. 19 members attended and “braved” the 30 degree weather. We are getting smarter with age and thankfully this time we came well prepared with lanterns, stoves and even a heater to keep us well fed and warm. The kids also helped out by catching enough fish to feed the entire tribe! The ropes course and craft projects kept the kids busy while the dads took advantage of the late afternoon sunlight to get a few minutes of rest. Although the rumors of bears kept us all on “high alert” we came away unscathed.
Chickadees
Big Rock Creek was as always a lot of fun for everyone. Half of our tribe arrived Friday night for the “Big Chill at Big Rock” where the temperatures must have fallen into the 20’s. Then the less hardy souls (or maybe those more overly scheduled with soccer and other sports commitments) arrived Saturday.
Fishing, rope climbing, crafts and s’mores kept all the Chickadees busy for the weekend. And at the induction ceremony the girls crafted and decorated flags for their offering.
We owe thanks to Bill Likes for hosting the October meeting at his teepee. All of the Chickadees dressed up in their Halloween costumes, ate cookies and watched a slide show of our trip to Big Rock that Bill put together with the help of our resident archivist Mark Nassief.
For our farewell of the evening we went outside and continued our Chickadee traditional send off. We recited the Chickadee motto and tossed the kids in to the air…
The next meeting will take place at 7:00PM on Wednesday, November 14th at Mountaisia. Hope to see you there!
