Smoke Signal - January 2008
The Smoke Signal details news as reported by individual tribes.
Cheyenne
The Cheyenne decided to make the most of our great weather this month and go for a hike. The entire tribe met at Towsley Canyon Park on The Old Road.
We hiked over a mile up the trail before stopping to take a break. We saw some hawks and great scenery. Most exciting were the various oil seeps. Here oil from deep within the earth rises naturally to the surface. The area also smelled like kerosene.

The trail proved no match for our braves, we decided to hike the entire small loop trail, which added another 2 miles to our hike. The trail took us along the ridgeline and provided us with spectacular views of our valley.
We also participated in the pinewood derby this month. Our tribe did very well and placed 2nd in the speed categories in Kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grade. We also had a 1st place winner in design. Way to go everyone!
Shoshone
Pinewood Derby
The tribe prepared for the Pinewood Derby by scheduling a day of construction at Andy and Madeleine’s house. Blocks of wood were cut, sanded, painted and turned into amazing looking cars, The next few weeks were spent (at least in Big Running Deer’s house) adding weights, lubricating wheels and taking numerous trips to the UPS store to ensure that the 6oz weight limit was not exceeded.

Race day at Saugus high school was rainy with the gym filled by at least 100 dads, kids and spectators. Clearly this event is taken very seriously by the dads as some of the designs were incredible!
In the end the Shoshone tribe raced valiantly but did not win any events however Jade Dodley walked away with the 1st place for second grade design. Congratulations!!!
Camp Whittle
If the rain and snow continues this year Camp Whittle on 2/22 – 2/24 should be an event to remember. Tribe members should bring warm sleeping bags, gloves, sleds and of course a change of clothes. We need to start thinking of a play to perform at the campfire. We will review ideas at the next tribe meeting at Mark and Taylor’s house on 2/13.
Scouting Mission
Albert, Chiara and Orianna DeQuay, three of our most dedicated tribe members have left on a scouting mission to Santa Monica. Albert played a crucial part is saving the Shoshone tribe from extinction in 2006 and helping to make it the size it is today. They have been equipped with a tracking device and can be reached at albertdequay@gmail.com. We wish them the best and hope for their safe return in the near future….
